Understanding Objectivity

Argument #1

An idea does not become objective by becoming generally accepted. Objectivity means the truth of the matter is independent of the person or people asking the question. Even if all the people agree. It is an objective fact that the world is round. Even if it was generally accepted that the world was flat, the world would still be round because it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks. The shape of the world is independent of any particular group of subjects, i.e., it is objective.

Argument #2

Absolutely nothing fits your parameters. Every objective truth fits mine. Truth is a human concept, so no human who subscribes to it can be free of it. Just as we cannot be free from reality and nature, we cannot escape them either. Not even the spherical shape of the earth is true, which is a concept human being give meaning to unless they accept it as such. Truth is what people make of it, and is never independent of people. You should get your mind out of Plato’s head. Concepts do not precede being, do not create the reality, or provide a blueprint of reality. We make them to suit us. Period. And yes, truth does have to conform to some reality, or people will die as a result; but that too is their choice.
